“Gold Is A Live Market Right Now” Says HSBC Analyst

The gold market is certainly a live market right now, with two up-days in a row contributing to the feeling around the markets that things could begin to change in the coming months for the precious metals markets.

“It’s definitely a very live market right now,” Howard Wen, a precious-metals analyst at HSBC Bank USA, told Wall Street Journal. “The combination of the Fed meeting and these economic indicators creates an environment for more volatile gold prices.”

“Substantial demand exceeding supply,” according to Tai Wong, the director of commodity products trading at BMO Capital Markets Corp. in New York, is what makes this market so exciting.

The Fed could delay “the first tightening out to 2016,” Bart Melek, the head of commodity strategy at TD Securities in Toronto, claimed. “And overnight, we did get some sort of signaling from the government of China that they may do something unconventional on the monetary front.”

Other things are at play, as well.

“The buoyancy of the Chinese stock market in the first quarter of 2015 helped subdue domestic gold purchases,” GFMS said as it released the report.

“The next move in the gold price is likely to be the result of a complex interplay between competing asset classes,” GFMS’ head of research Rhona O’Connell said. “In the short term, the price remains under some pressure, but any approach towards $1,100 will be constrained by a growing demand side response.”

“Further out, clarification of the timing of the first rate hike in the United States will remove a degree of uncertainty from the markets and is likely to trigger the start of a secular, but gentle, bull run in the gold price.”
